How the Akeyo Model Works

A complete cycle from training to market, designed around what farmers need to thrive.

Access to Credit

Through savings groups, farmers gain access to affordable credit. This allows them to invest in quality inputs and equipment without upfront financial strain.

Training icon

Practical Training

Farmers receive video-based and in-field training on climate-smart practices, helping them improve yields, reduce losses and farm more sustainably.

Inputs icon

Quality Inputs Delivered

Seeds, fertiliser and equipment are delivered directly to farming communities. No long travel, no middlemen, just what farmers need, when they need it.

Market Access

When harvest arrives, Akeyo connects farmers to buyers through export and e-commerce channels, ensuring their hard work leads to a reliable income.

Accountability by Sales

A simple principle: farmers only pay for what creates real value.

Sustainable and Independent

Farmers choose to invest in services and products at fair prices. This creates a self-sustaining system that does not rely on handouts or temporary funding.

Built on Trust

Farmers pay because they see results: better seeds, practical training and a reliable market. Every product and service proves its worth.

Lasting Impact

Local agents earn a dignified income. Savings groups grow stronger. Farmers invest, produce and sell, building prosperity that endures.

What the Research Shows

Rigorous academic studies support each pillar of the Akeyo model.

Savings groups research paper

Savings Groups Work

In a randomized control trial, researchers find that savings groups strongly improve savings and credit levels and also lead to women empowerment and business outcomes. As stand-alone, savings groups are highly effective and sustainable, though not in themselves transformative.

Video training research paper

Videos Lead to Change

Videos are effective at changing behaviour and increasing yields. Households that were shown videos of improved maize storage practices were more likely to apply recommended practices and reported increased maize yields of 10.5%, primarily from using good practices and organic fertiliser.

Hermetic bags research paper

Simple Technologies Improve Food Security

Hermetic bags are air- and waterproof, improving grain storage by limiting mold, pests and post-harvest loss. In one study, the share of households who were severely food insecure dropped by 38% after the distribution of hermetic bags.
